The Already and the Not Yet
This recording is a documentation of a recital given at New England Conservatory in partial fulfillment of my masters degree in the Department of Contemporary Improvisation. The music for this recital took shape in the form of a suite: one continuous piece of music made up of several themes which ebb and flow within the duration of the larger work. This way of putting material together has been of interest to me in the past several years as I have become more and more interested in the blending of composition and improvisation in a way which remains respectful of both of these disciplines. Using a longer form, more attention can be given to recurring themes and these themes can be used as extra musical metaphors. In The Already and the Not Yet, composed and improvised moments happen in myriad relationships - sometimes simultaneously, sometimes independently, sometimes as foil for one another. In this way the two elements of composition and improvisation are intended to represent the ever-present earthly conditions of foreknowledge and chance, respectively. We move freely and yet only so because of and within a greater Form which we can see now only in "poor reflection".

James Falzone
April 2000

"Mr. Falzone blends composition with improvisation seamlessly with Ms. Shrimpton's quaint vocals performing some older (16th & 17th centuries) texts on just a few pieces. "Come Unto Me Ye Weary", which is in four parts, is austere and quietly charming. This music comes from a much older style with Falzone providing lush harmonies for the accordion, clarinet, cello and haunting vocals. James' superb clarinet is often at the center and is consistently enchanting. This music is closer to an older music style and is played with delicacy and grace. Since this disc was released, we've only become familiar with three of these musicians besides Falzone himself, Okkyung Lee (possibly her first recorded appearance?), Nate Radley (Loren Stillman & Alan Ferber sideman) and Jane Wang (Sabir Mateen Unit). What's interesting is to hear how these musicians have evolved since this date ten years ago. The title piece is especially ambitious with a hypnotic opening solo from Okkyung and an exquisite, eerie second half. This disc shows a great deal of restraint and thoughtfulness and will take a bit of patience to fully appreciate. It is completely different from anything James Falzone has produced since yet is is still an early gem worth considering."
